曹格来自热爱音乐的家庭。他的父亲是律师。
1岁，父母离婚。
9岁，生平第一次参加歌唱比赛。同一年，家人送他到加拿大念书。
15岁，曹格独自飞向南半球的新西兰深造，选读土木工程。曾经回来马来西亚，但后因学业跟不上，于是回到新西兰继续读书。因长期在异乡生活，那些生活丰富了他的音乐才华。
在华语音乐、卡达山民族音乐、毛利人及欧美音乐文化等不断冲击下，曹格成功将这些民族音乐融入其创作中，打造专属曹格风格的音乐创作。
18岁，自制Demo带寄到唱片公司 。
1999 年，天王郭富城推出的首张EP《 Ask For More 》 就录了曹格的三首创作，包括〈只有你〉、〈我 了〉、〈我的问题你没回答〉。
20岁，回马来西亚并报名参加1999年Astro新秀大赛，曹格都获得好评如潮。由此他认清了自己的方向，要在音乐的路上作一番努力并决定留在马来西亚。
2001年推出首张专辑《笑我笨》，2002年娱协奖新人推荐奖铜奖。自发行《笑我笨》这张专辑后，曹格终于在22岁那年终新加坡遇上著名音乐制作人涂惠元这位伯乐，让他有机会远赴台湾发展及学习，然而台湾的生活及机遇并非全然一帆风顺，5年内让他体会不少生活中甜酸苦辣。
2001年在马来西亚发行《Gary》同名专辑。 3年后签约滚石唱片。
2006年1月26日滚石唱片发行了《曹格首张创作专辑-格格Blue》，曹格开始受到众多乐迷支持。因此曹格以被称为「贵族忧郁王子」的形象重返乐坛。
2007年5月4日第18届金曲奖入围名单公布，凭着最新专辑《Superman超级男声》而提名最佳华语男歌手奖。
曹格在讲他创作的过程只是很简单一句话：『因为自己想唱到好听的歌曲，所以开始创作』。
2007年7月开始，曹格于香港居住，并已推出第一首广东歌《海边的卡夫卡》。并于同年推出第二首广东歌《左右无缘》
2008年1月推出最新国语专辑《Super Sunshine》。
2008年5月22日第19届金曲奖入围名单公布，曹格与恩师涂惠源一起共入围四项大奖，分别是最佳国语男歌手奖、最佳作曲、最佳编曲、最佳年度歌曲。
2008年7月5号台湾金曲奖颁奖典礼上曹格凭着专辑《Super Sunshine》荣获最佳国语男歌手奖，成为金曲奖歌王。
2008年度TVB8金曲奖，凭《无辜》获得金曲奖。
很多人听过《睫毛弯弯》这首歌，但很多人并不知道这首歌的作曲者，曾经是一个放弃作曲，差点把自己也丢掉的歌手。
曹格的成长岁月
曹格是马来西亚人，他酷爱音乐，从小学直到大学，他一帆风顺，没有受到过大的挫折。大学毕业后，他只身来到台湾发展，想借自己的音乐才能取得成功。但是，他所喜欢的音乐不仅没有给他带来快乐，反而给他带来了无尽的痛苦。
曹格写了80多首歌，送给制作人后，几乎每一首歌都遭到批评：这首歌太难听了，这种歌没有任何市场。无情的否定让他心力交瘁。因为远离故乡，又迫于生计，他的苦闷无处排遣，他得了抑郁症。祸不单行的是，许多人在批评他写的歌时，还批评他的长相：你长得很丑，就像你写的歌那样。这样的批评，让曹格的自尊心受到了残酷的伤害，他彻底绝望了，他感觉自己就像一条流浪在台湾的狗，他不敢照镜子，害怕看到自己的丑样。

这些肯定让他振作起来，他写出了让王心凌演唱的《睫毛弯弯》。他靠这首歌获得了巨大的收益，还让亚太地区的歌手记住了他，纷纷让他为自己写歌。
曹格在新加坡宣传他的最新专辑《superman》（超人）时说:“超人很伟大，每天飞来飞去救别人，可是，连superman也需要别人的帮助啊！”面对自己的人生逆转，他坦诚地说，每一个人都要重视自己，不要被别人的意见所左右，因为只有你自己，才能对自己的成败负责。
